Costume in Historical Romance
I've always been a historical costume freak. I started collecting vintage clothing when I was in fifth grade. I had to start collecting something--our family hobby while I was growing up was patrolling thrift stores and house sales for "treasure." I even considered grad school study in fashion history. (Thankfully, I had a friend who pursued fashion history as a vocation and this quickly disspelled any notions of glamour that I had once associated with the field. Fascinating, yes; paying jobs, no.) As a reader of historical romance, I recognize that the books ultimately have to be about the taking off of the corset rather than the corset itself. I do love a historical romance that manages to tie a bit of costume history deftly into the writing. Judith Ivory's The Proposition comes to mind with the lingerie shop and one long pair of legs featured in the first scene. And then there's Loretta Chase's Lord of Scoundrels with that fantastic scene in the ice cream shop where Dain takes off Jessica's glove (although admittedly I've never inquired into the historical accuracy of that element). I'll have to see if I can think of some more.
