I have a weakness for books. I suppose that goes without saying for any writer. I imagine that I'm like a lot of other writers in that I also buy more books than I will ever probably read. (I'm the kind of person who hears all the words out loud in my head as I read, so I'm just slow. Compounded by busy.)
So, today, my Amazon delivery arrived full of good offerings, which are:
Sherry Thomas' new book Private Arrangements. I can't recall where I came across the hub-bub, but I did some across some hub-bub as Ms. Thomas being a great new voice in historical romance. I always a sucker for a great new voice--especially a great new voice who seems to have a career, two small kids and STILL got a book written. "Hooray for crazy sleep-deprived moms!" I say.
Meredith Duran's book The Duke of Shadows. This was recommended in preview form by Smart Bitches, not to mention compared with Joanna Bourne's The Spymaster's Lady. And, really, who can resist a historical romance set in India? I think the only other one I've ever read is Loretta Chase's Sandalwood Princess--a very fine regency. I bought my copy years ago on eBay for a small fortune. It's probably been re-issued now.
Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. My sister-in-law tells me this is not great, but Jane Espenson highly recommended it on her blog. Also, I managed to steer my book group (not known for its prudent book choices) toward this selection for the upcoming month.
And last, Cairo by G. Willow Wilson and M.K. Perker. It's a graphic novel that I heard about on NPR. The interview with Willow Wilson was intriguing, and I'm committed to finding some kind of graphic novel material that I love. I tried Sandman. I tried the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. They just didn't do it for me. Perhaps it was the lack of sex. We'll see how this goes.
