Kindred by Octavia Butler
this was my book group's choice last month. I liked it, although you could feel certain tensions around the premise (a 20th c. African-American woman travels back in time to 19th c. Maryland) and whether the protagonist was an internally consistent character. I saw over on "Teach Me Tonight" that this book is taught in African-American-focused romance courses, which I find fascinating because it isn't really a traditional romance at all, although there are romantic elements. My book clulb didn't discuss that aspect of the book too much, but I'm planning to Google on it. Will try to post here what I find out.
